North American softshell turtles
Recognition
The three North American softshell turtles have pronounced sexual dimorphism, four or more plastral callosities, short epiplastral extensions, the nuchal at least three times broader than long, the 8th pair of costals reduced or lost, and eight or nine neurals (Carapacial bones of Apalone, Plastral bones of Apalone).
