European Pond Turtles
Recognition
The single living species of this genus is the semi-aquatic Emys orbicularis. It is unique in being the only living Old World representative of the family Emydidae, and also the only turtle to occur over most of Europe, especially north of the Alps. Several fossil species and subspecies have also been described that date back to the Miocene (see Fritz, 1995b, for a review).
