Indian softshell turtles
Recognition
This genus comprises four closely related Asiatic species which are unique among the Trionychinae in having a preneural and a neural between the first pair of costals. Five callosities are present on the plastron, and the anterior epiplastral arms are intermediate in length. In the skull, the jugal touches the squamosal in some individuals, and the basisphenoid is medially constricted. Meylan (1987) thought this genus most closely related to the genus Nilssonia, but see comment under that genus.
